Allergies can range in severity from relatively common but annoying symptoms of hay fever (allergic rhinitis) to skin rashes (contact dermatitis) and more distressing problems, such as allergic asthma and bronchitis. In rare cases an allergic reaction may even result in death from anaphylactic shock. Life threatening reactions such as heart irregularities or severe breathing difficulties warrant tests and treatment by an allergist. The allergist is a specially trained physician concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of allergies and allergic diseases. Lesser irritations often can be self-helped.
